Monks on Wheels in association with Justwravel brings to you one of the most beautiful treks in India. Kashmir, often called paradise on earth, boasts incomparable beauty, making the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek a truly unique experience. Embarking on this trek means witnessing the magic of heavenly lakes nestled in the Himalayas. Every moment offers breathtaking views, filling you with a sense of gratitude for being alive. From lofty mountains and green meadows to lakes resembling melted turquoise gems, words fail to capture the beauty of this trek. However, the ever-changing landscape and the hidden gems of Kashmir reveal themselves to those who are patient and determined. The Kashmir Great Lakes Trek is moderately to difficult, and novice trekkers are advised to gain the necessary skills and experience. Even for experienced trekkers, the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek is challenging but immensely rewarding. The journey through meadows adorned with pine and maple trees, serene alpine lakes, and valleys with grazing sheep and gentle breezes is like stepping into a fairytale.
Our journey begins in Srinagar, from where we drive to Sonamarg, located at an altitude of 7,800 ft, to reach Shitkadi Village, the base camp for the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek. The three-hour drive is filled with beautiful scenery. The next day, we head out for Nichnai. A three-hour ascent is followed by a one-hour descent and a gentle ascent to Nichnai, located at an altitude of 11,811 ft. The trail starts with a road track alongside the Sindh River, soon gaining elevation. After a short walk, you reach a lush green meadow with the town of Sonamarg below. The trail descends at the tree line before climbing again, leading to a coniferous forest of maple trees. The uphill trail opens to stunning views of the Sonamarg valley from an elevated ridge. The meadow, stretching for almost 40 ft, seems like the Garden of Eden with its silver birch trees and flowing water. Peaks covered with snow beckon you closer to Shekdur, a beautiful spot with Bhoj trees. Our campsite at Nichnai is two hours away, where the valley widens between mountain ranges, signaling the start of Nichnai.
The next day, we descend into a meadow to reach Vishansar Lake at 12,000 ft. This six-hour trek begins with the Nichnai Pass, leading to a gradual ascent and a rapid descent. The rocky trail gives way to blooming flowers and lush green meadows with a river flowing through. A sparkling waterfall cascades from the cliffs above, forming a commune with the river. Flat meadows and the contrasting Himalayan and Ladakh-like mountains will take your breath away. Crossing another stream, you reach the end of the valley. Vishansar Lake, nestled at the base of four majestic mountains, is known for its changing colors depending on the time of day. The reflections on the lake’s surface are mesmerizing, making it a must-visit on the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek. We stay at the campsite for acclimatization.
The trail to Gadsar Pass is 10 km long and moderately difficult. It includes a steep ascent lined with ridges. Kishansar Lake, located 500 ft higher than Vishansar Lake, is equally beautiful. The trail climbs to the top of the ridge, where you see both lakes together. The Gadsar Pass, at 13,750 ft, offers a picturesque view of the valley with small lakes and peaks in the distance. Descending from the pass, you encounter Yamsar Lake and another nameless lake. The valley narrows, leading to Gadsar Lake at 12,500 ft, near an army base camp. Reporting to the army camp is crucial for safety checks and ID verification.
Next, we trek 12 km to the Satsar campsite at 12,000 ft. Overlooking the treeline, the trail leads to lush green meadows with streams running through. The campsite near Satsar Lake, a collection of seven lakes, offers stunning views. Beyond the ridge lies the Satsar army check post, where you go through another ID verification process.
The final part of the trek takes us to Gangabal Lake, the biggest of the Great Lakes. This moderate trek involves navigating boulder-strewn terrain, leading to a rewarding view of the lake. After walking through ridges and pine forests, you reach the Harmukh peak and the shores of Nundkol Lake. The Harmukh glacier hangs from the cliffs above. This 12 km trek tests your endurance but rewards you with majestic views. From the Gangabal campsite, we descend along the stream towards the tree line, passing through pine forests before reaching Naranag. The last stretch is challenging but soon the stone-paved track leads to the main road of Naranag, from where we drive to Srinagar.
Each day of the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek brings new challenges and unforgettable beauty, making it an exciting yet demanding adventure.

The Kashmir Great Lakes Trek is considered one of the most beautiful treks in India, offering a 360° view of panorama mountains, rolling meadows, alpine lakes, and valleys. The trek is set on a canvas that’s larger than life, with every day presenting a 360° panorama of wild, rugged mountains, rolling meadows, and turquoise alpine lakes. The trek is situated 75 km northeast of Srinagar and covers more than six alpine lakes and five very different valleys, making it a moderate-difficult trek spanning over six days. The lakes on the trek, such as Vishansar and Kishansar, are connected, with the same water flowing in both. Interestingly, no algae formation can be found in these two lakes, which means that nothing can grow in this lake except for trout fish. Gadsar Lake, on the other hand, appears green due to algae growth. The Kashmir Great Lakes Trek is also known for its meadows, which come in every shape and size, sometimes many in a day. After this trek, every other trek feels as though it is a movie on a small screen due to its grandeur.

How to reach Kashmir Great Lakes Trek
By Flight: Traveling to Srinagar can be done via different modes of transportation. If you prefer flying, the closest airport is Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport, also known as Srinagar Airport, with the airport code SXR.
By Train: For those who prefer traveling by train, it’s important to note that there are no operational rail-trails within the picturesque valley of Srinagar. The nearest railway station is Jammu Tawi Railway Station, which is approximately a 6-and-a-half-hour journey to reach Srinagar.
By Bus: If you choose to travel by road, Srinagar is easily accessible by cab, vehicle, or bus. While the roads are generally in good condition, there are mountainous areas and rough patches that may require you to travel at a slower pace.
