Gaumukh Tapovan Trek Overview

Monks on Wheels in association with Justwravel brings to you the Gaumukh Tapovan Trek, a Himalayan trek that leads to the source of the Holy River Ganga should be one of the most sought-after adventures, yet the Gaumukh Tapovan Trek remains incredibly underrated.

Gaumukh, meaning “mouth of a cow,” derives its name from the glacier’s resemblance to a cow’s snout. This sacred site holds immense significance as a Hindu pilgrimage destination, visited by many devotees alongside Gangotri. Nestled at an altitude of 14,600 ft in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, the Gaumukh Tapovan Trek offers spectacular views of the Garhwal Himalayas, with Mt. Shivling and the majestic Bhagirathi massif being the most prominent peaks. Spanning 46 km, the trail leads to Gaumukh, the terminus of the Gaumukh Glacier and the source of the Bhagirathi River. The Bhagirathi and Alaknanda rivers converge at Devprayag to form the holy river Ganga.

Starting from Gangotri, the trek takes you through the Gangotri National Park, home to rare snow leopards and various species of flora and fauna. This 8-day trek blends spirituality and adventure, featuring steep ascents, rocky formations, grasslands, and lush green forests, offering some of the most glorious views imaginable. The journey begins in Gangotri, often called the source of Ganga, although it leads to Gaumukh, the actual origin of the river. The mythological significance of the Bhagirathi River is rooted in the story of King Bhagirath, who implored Lord Shiva to request Goddess Ganga to purify the ashes of his sons. This legend is why many pilgrims visit Gangotri and Gaumukh, believing the river washes away sins and cleanses the soul.  Gangotri is a 10-12 hour drive from Dehradun, offering stunning views of enchanting valleys and the majestic Himalayas. The actual trek begins with a hike to Chirbasa from Gangotri. The trail to Chirbasa passes through lush green forests, offering a stunning view of Sudarshan Parbat and other Himalayan peaks. This easy 10 km stretch features gradual inclines and ample water sources to keep you energized. As you cross streams and rivers, the valley opens up, dotted with silver birch trees.

Throughout the Gaumukh Tapovan trek, the Bhagirathi River roars below, and the trail, enclosed by the Gangotri National Park, reveals glimpses of wildlife and blooming flowers. Near the end of the trail, a forest department check post marks your arrival at the Chirbasa campsite, offering views of the Bhagirathi peaks and the Gaumukh Glacier. The next day, you’ll trek to Bhojbasa, a gradual ascent with scarce water resources. As you embark on this path, the valley opens wider, revealing stunning snow-capped peaks. The trail, composed of boulders and sediment, requires caution due to loose rocks. As you approach Bhojbasa, the tree line disappears, and the valley widens, offering views of Mt. Shivling, the Gaumukh Glacier, and the Bhojbasa valley. Nestled at an altitude of 12,415 ft, this campsite is one of the most beautiful halt points, with crystal-clear skies and expansive grasslands framed by glorious Himalayan peaks. The trail to Gaumukh narrows, making it seem like the valley is closing in. As you ascend, you’ll reach your first glacial river crossing with Mt. Shivling towering on your right. After navigating a rocky face, you’ll finally see the Gaumukh Glacier. Climbing rocky patches provides the best view of the glacier in all its glory.

The next stretch to Tapovan is the trickiest, featuring steep ascents and glacier walks, ascending to an altitude of 14,203 ft. A few minutes from the Bhojbasa campsite, you’ll cross the Bhagirathi River using a forest department-installed trolley. The initial stretch is an easy walk, followed by a gradual ascent over large rocks and boulders, culminating in a steep climb to Tapovan. At Tapovan, a high-altitude meadow, the campsite offers magnificent views of the Garhwal Himalayas, including Mt. Shivling, Meru, Sumeru, and the Bhagirathi peaks. Exploring Tapovan reveals various vantage points with breathtaking valley views. Staying at Tapovan is a peaceful retreat, attracting renowned sages for meditation. The Gaumukh Tapovan Trek is a unique journey showcasing nature’s raw glory through the Gaumukh Glacier and the Bhagirathi River, accompanied by breathtaking views of the Garhwal Himalayas.

The Gaumukh Tapovan trek is one of the best post-monsoon treks, with winter approaching and autumn hues dominating the landscape. It offers a thrilling yet peaceful experience, steeped in mythology and leading to some of the most spectacular mountain views.

  • Hiking Shoes : Durable footwear designed for rugged terrains.

  • Tees / Tshirts: You must keep at least three pairs of quick dry tees so that you can wash them in between stops for proper hygiene.
  • Poncho: A poncho is an evolved form of a raincoat that provides coverage to your body as well as your bag and ensures total water protection from rain.

  • Sanitizer: Essential for maintaining cleanliness while trekking.
  • Sun Cap / Hat: A lightweight sun cap with side flaps is perfect to keep your head cool and avoid sunburns on a sunny day.
  • Sunscreen SPF 40+: To avoid sunburns and chafing, you need to put on sunscreen as well as cold cream.

  • Personal Toileteries: A bag with all your essentials including napkins, toothpaste, sanitizers, paper soap, etc should be carried in a ziplock bag.
  • Personal Medication / First Aid: A few cuts and bruises are almost inevitable when you are on a trek so carrying a medical kit with bandages, Dettol, etc is necessary.
  • Sun Glasses / Reading Glasses: Photochromatic glasses are specs that are designed to transform into anti-glare shades depending upon exposure to the sun. They are good when it comes to eye protection but one can also opt for clip-on glasses etc.
  • Charger: To keep your electronic devices powered during the trip.
  • Power Bank: Ensures your devices stay charged when there are no outlets.
  • Personal Documents & ID’s: Identification proofs like Aadhar Card, Drivers License.
  • Laundry Bag (Waterproof): In case your clothes get wet or your garments don’t dry, you can carry them in polythene. However, make sure that all the plastic that you are carrying into the woods leaves with you. Don’t litter in the mountains.

  • Trekking Shoes: A good trekking shoe is comfortable, provides ankle support, and has a good grip as well. They shouldn’t be chunky, instead, they should be lightweight and sturdy.
  • Cotton Socks: Cotton socks are extremely comfortable to move around in and are lightweight as well which is why you can always count on a good pair of cotton socks while trekking. However, keep in mind to change them and avoid wearing them when they are wet.
  • Woolen Socks: A good pair of woolen socks, especially merino, are comfortable, limit odors and provide adequate insulation from the cold so you can wear them at night.
  • Woolen Gloves: Insulated gloves help in maintaining proper body heat in your hands and also provide a better grasp on trekking poles.
  • Main Jacket: It’s emphasized that you need to carry proper layers so you can avoid getting cold which is why you need to carry a heavy jacket that you can put on over your other clothes.
  • Woolen Cap: A woolen cap will help prevent cold when you ascend to high altitude. You can also cover your ears to avoid any pain and discomfort you might face in them when going at high altitudes.
  • Hoodie: A versatile layering option for various temperatures.
  • Scarf / Balaclava: Along with sun rays and chilly winds, you also get hit by dirt and grime during treks which is why it’s important to carry a scarf or balaclava so you can cover your face when needed.
  • Head Lamp: You can’t rely on moonlight when you are in the mountains. A torch or even a headlamp with a fresh pair of batteries is always a good idea to bring along.
  • Trekking Pole: The trekking pole assists in more than one way. It saves energy while also providing stability and helps you to maintain proper balance.
