Special Notes:

  1. Expect seasonal variations in Meghalaya depending on the month we are travelling
  2. During heavy rains, the waterfalls will be in full flow but water contains mud from the mountains
  3. During winters and summers, we may get crystal clear water in the rivers and streams, but water will be less
  4. Travelers are expected to come with open heart by appreciating complexities of Mother nature based on seasonal variations, monthly or even daily weather conditions.
  5. There is no luxury involved in any part of this trip. This is a backpacking trip with basic facilities.

Seasonal Variations:

  1. Jan to Mar: Winters are pleasantly cold in Meghalaya which pull tourists in good numbers. There’s still a good amount of water to play in rivers and waterfalls (Umngot, Krang Suri, Rainbow). However, those giant waterfalls meant for viewing are quiet (Nohkalikal, Wei Sawdong) this season.
  2. Apr to Sept (Monsoons): The rains hit the mountains starting from April. Meghalaya has a long monsoon season. They start slow in April/May, consistently increase during June, peak around July/August and reduce by mid of Sept. Thick clouds all around interrupt views. With the brute force of water, one cannot take dips/play in water anywhere.
  3. Mid Sept to Dec (Post monsoon): The giant waterfalls (Nohkalikal, Weisawdong) are at their best post monsoons with enchanting views. End of the year (Nov, Dec, Jan) is good to play in the clear waters of rivers and waterfalls (Umngot, Krang Suri, Rainbow). Temperatures may drop below 5 degrees towards the end of the year.

  3. Guwahati being a busy city, you could expect traffic blocks. The journey usually takes 3.5 hours, covering 120 Km.
  4. We will stop by a restaurant for lunch on our way.
  5. You can begin getting dazzled by Meghalaya and its beauty on the way as we can stop at Umium Lake and take a ride on a boat. You can spend a couple of hours here, catching the picturesque views the lake has to offer
  6. We will reach Shillong town late in the evening. You could buy snacks and drinks at Police Bazar and then check in to the guest house and get freshened up.
  7. Later in the evening, we will gather in the common area to get to know each other, with some games and music.

Day 2:

  1. The day will begin early with breakfast.
  2. We will head to the Laitlum Grand Canyon and get started with the trip enjoying the eye-catching view of the East Khasi Hills. You can also take beautiful pictures going down the valley through the stairs.
  3. From there, we will begin our journey to the extremely beautiful Krang Suri Waterfall, which is located in the Jaintia Hills.
  4. On the way, we will have a quick lunch break.
  5. Once reaching our destination, the waterfalls will greet you with its lush blue waters that will forever remain in your mind. You may take a dip in this beauty, but with life jackets on.
  6. The chilly waters might seem like a dare to jump into, but the adrenaline rush it offers makes up for the cold!
  7. After the soothing and daring dips, we will continue to the banks of the Umngot river at Shnongpdeng.
  8. Here, we will enjoy camping by the riverside, with a bonfire and fun activities.
  9. We will rest afterward to be ready for the adventures the next day has to offer.

Day 3:

  1. The clear waters of the Umngot river will greet you with the best mornings, with the fine rays of sun falling over the calmly flowing river. You can also explore a spectacular suspension bridge there.
  2. After having breakfast at the camp, we will get into the main activities at Shnongpdeng, which include boating, cliff jumping, kayaking, etc. (in accordance with availability).
  3. Soaking in the transparent waters of Shnongpdeng for a few hours, under the sun looking over you with grace, will be one experience that you could add to the best moments of your life.
  4. We will then stop at Dawki, where the Umngot river bids goodbye to the country, flowing towards Bangladesh. Here, we could get a peek at the border areas and our neighbors.
  5. The next stop is Mawlynnong, which is the cleanest village in Asia. We will visit this village post lunch. In the village, you get to see the cleanest roads and a bamboo tower made to view Bangladesh from a distance. You can enjoy serenity and peace in this village.
  6. We will then head to the last destination of the day, Cherrapunji where we will spend the night.
  7. After dinner and the daily social hours, you can go rest in the comforts of your guest house.

Day 4:

  1. Our next day will begin with breakfast in the peaceful, cold city of Cherrapunji.
  2. After breakfast, we will head towards the base village Tyrna, from where we will begin our trek down to the Nongriat village, where we will find the Double Decker Living Root Bridges.
  3. This challenging trek will make us go down 3641 steps to the depths of Meghalaya. And we will be staying overnight at the Nongriat village, which offers just the basic facilities.
  4. The Double Decker Living Root Bridges are a marvel of nature and humans, who through generations, have constructed and maintained bridges made by bending the roots of trees. It will take us another 1.5 hours of trek to reach the Rainbow Falls from the root bridges.
  5. By the time we reach Nongriat, travelers are advised to carry enough food items like snacks, drinks, and energy bars as by then we would have reached some very remote areas of Meghalaya where finding proper meals is difficult.
  6. A dip in the cold waters of the beautiful Rainbow Falls is enough to drain out all the exhaustion of the trek! And if we are lucky, we could also spot a rainbow at the falls if the sun is shining still.
  7. After enjoying the falls, we will trek back to Nongriat village, where the village dorms will be arranged for your overnight stay.

Day 5:

  1. This morning is also going to be a special one as the day starts at one of the remotest places in India.
  2. We will have to begin early after breakfast and get back to the Tyrna village from where we started.
  3. The 3600 steps that we descended have to be climbed up. This might seem like a difficult task, but a little enthusiasm accompanied by stories and laughter will make them easier to conquer. The hike will usually take 2-3 hours, with frequent breaks in between.
  4. From there, we will start our journey to the enchanting Mawsmai caves, made of limestone, untouched by the hands of humans. It is a natural wonder that has withstood the passing of time and generations but which still holds its magnificence. Even though only parts of the caves are open to tourists, you can play around the maze-like structure and sneak in between the tricky paths!
  5. Later, you can dress up in traditional Meghalaya Khasi attire, look as colorful and vibrant as the state and its people, and take as many pictures as you need.
  6. Next, we will have a leisurely lunch to compensate for the lack of proper meals yesterday and regain energy for the rest of the trip.
  7. The next destination will be as per the group’s choice as we have two options, the Nohkalikai Waterfalls, one of the biggest waterfalls in India, and the Wei Sawdong waterfalls, which is a three-layered waterfall.
  8. Both places cannot be covered, due to time restraints caused by the early setting of the sun in Meghalaya.
  9. After the visit to the waterfalls, we will reach Cherrapunji, where we will stay in the homestay and will have our final dinner together.
  10. You may rest off the exhaustion of two days at the warm homestay.

Day 6:

  1. The day will have to begin early, as we have to check out by 7 AM. We will check out after breakfast.
  2. Once checked out, we will head towards Shillong, where we will visit the Don Bosco Museum. The museum is a center that showcases the colors and culture of the northeastern states.
  3. The trip to this museum is one important part of visiting Meghalaya, as it will attract you more to the cultures of the North East and makes you want to explore more, like the states of Nagaland and Sikkim.
  4. In Shillong, we will have some tastes of the local food and the special Shillong teas.
  5. Our trip will end with the final destination being Guwahati.
  6. We will start around 3- 3 30 PM to reach Guwahati late in the evening.
  7. You could board the flights that depart after 8: 30 PM or, we could help you in finding guest houses to stay the night and leave the next day.
