Sikkim will take you to all the natural wonders as the high mountain passes, pristine glaciers, ice-cold rivers, hot springs in contrast to that, alpine lakes, and a lot more.

Monks on Wheels in association with Muddie Trails takes you to the stunningly beautiful state of Sikkim nestled in the Himalayas known for its eco-friendly and sustainable tourism policies, making it an ideal destination for nature lovers and adventurers seeking an authentic Himalayan experience.

In this backpacking trip, we will cover all the attractions in Sikkim, both East and North, and will also be visiting the capital city of Sikkim, Gangtok.

Our journey will start in the East, with a visit to the top attraction there, like the Tsomgo Lake, which is a natural wonder that changes its color with the seasons, the Baba Mandir and the ghost story associated with it, and the Indo- China border post, the NathuLa Pass.

When we move to the north, we will be visiting the dreamy Gurudongmar Lake, which in winter remains frozen and in summers enchants us with its amazing beauty. This lake is one of the lakes that is situated at such a high altitude that is open to visitors.

The Lachung village, where we will be staying is a picturesque village by the mountains, blessed with mighty waterfalls, orchards of apricot and apple, and many handicraft centers.

We will also be visiting the “valley of flowers” in Yumthang, which is a part of the Lachung valley. Located by the banks of the Lachung river, a tributary of the main river that originates from Sikkim, Teesta, the valley is also abundant with many species of Rhododendron flowers. Hot springs that are said to have medicinal properties are also among the main attractions of Sikkim.

Sikkim is the perfect blend of nature and beauty, and the intervention of humans has only made it more beautiful. The scenic bridges adorned with colorful prayer flags, monasteries, and temples, everything is balanced and closely knit with nature, which will bring peace to our minds.

Short Itinerary

Day 1:

  1. Travelers coming by Flight will get picked at Bagdogra Airport at around 1 PM in the afternoon followed by New Jalpaiguri (NJP) railway station around 01:15 PM.
  2. We will start our journey towards the capital city of Sikkim – Gangtok along the curvy road that runs parallel to the free flowing Teesta river originating from the glaciers of Sikkim.
  3. It’s a drive of 200 Km that usually takes 5 hours along with a Lunch stop.
  4. Check into the guest house by late evening and take a walk on the famous MG marg – the mall road of Gangtok. You can try tasty momos or chow for Dinner and shop for items needed for the trip.
  5. We will rest for a good day tomorrow.

 

Day 2:

  1. Start the day early with Breakfast
  2. Go on a day trip towards picturesque oval-shaped Tsomgo Lake (also called Changu Lake) which is famous for sturdy Yaks, Red Panda and various migratory Birds.
  3. Continue journey to Baba Mandir at an elevation of 13,000 feet. There is an interesting “Ghost” story of Baba Harbhajan Singh who served Indian Army during the 1960s.
  4. We will then head to Nathula Pass on the Indo-China border at an elevation of 14,100 feet, which needs a special permit (we would have pre-applied beforehand).
  5. Nathu La is strategically important for the Indian Army, and is one of the very few Himalayan border posts open for visitors like us.
  6. Head back to the guest house by late evening.
  7. Dinner with social gathering and take good rest for the night.

 

Day 3:

  1. Today we will start our journey towards high altitude North Sikkim famous for snow capped mountains, pristine lakes, gushing water falls and natural hot springs.
  2. Take a pit stop at Butterfly waterfalls and Bhim Nala falls, click lots of selfies.
  3. Stop for Lunch at beautiful Chungthang village at the confluence of Lachen and Lachung rivers.
  4. We will continue our journey to the next destination Lachung Valley.
  5. Rest for the night at Lachung guest house.

 

Day 4:

  1. Start the day very early around 4 AM.
  2. We will head towards Yumthang valley, situated at an elevation of 11800 feet, a 1.5 hour drive from Lachung.
  3. Yumthang which is known as ‘Valley of Flowers” is located in the valley by the Lachung river. It is a picture perfect setting surrounded by snow-clad mountains on all sides.
  4. Give a visit to natural Yumthang hot springs which are known for their medicinal properties because of rich Sulphur and other mineral content. There is a beautiful walking bridge filled with colorful prayer flags across the river Lachung. Hot springs are located at the other side of the bridge. The temperature of hot water springs varies between 50 to 60 degrees celsius even in freezing winter times. Truly a little wonder of mother nature.
  5. We will try local food for Lunch.
  6. Start return journey towards Gangtok by late afternoon.
  7. Check into Gangtok guest house, Dinner and rest.

 

Day 5:

  1. Check out of the Gangtok stay after a heavy Breakfast.
  2. Start journey towards a peaceful village named Ravangla that has a Buddha Park where a giant statue of Buddha sits amidst the backdrop of Himalayas.
  3. Take a stroll in the park, visit Museum, temple & spend some quality time meditating at this serene setting.
  4. After Lunch, continue our journey to one of the most picturesque towns of Sikkim, Pelling that is located at the foothills of World’s 3rd highest peak – the mighty Kanchenjunga!
  5. We will visit interesting places in Pelling like ancient Pemayangtse Monastery, Rabdentse Ruins and local flea market where one can buy traditional handicrafts and souvenirs.
  6. Dinner and rest at Pelling guest house.

 

Day 6:

  1. Early morning we will visit the stunning Sky walk of Pelling that is also called a Glass Bridge. Sky walk is a well-maintained & famous place in Pelling with all safety measures. On a clear day, one can get to view magnificence of mighty Kanchenjunga.
  2. Note: Sometimes we will visit Sky Walk a day before itself, especially where there are afternoon flights to catch from Bagdogra Airport.
  3. Check out of Pelling stay after Breakfast.
  4. We will then bid adieu to the Himalayas of Sikkim and head back towards planes of West Bengal where we started our journey 6 days back.
  5. It’s a 5 hour journey including a Lunch stop, so it’s safe to book flight after 6:00 PM.

Special Notes:

  • Expect seasonal variations in Sikkim depending on the month we are travelling
  • Travelers are expected to come with open heart by appreciating complexities of mother nature based on seasonal variations, monthly or even daily weather conditions.
  • There is no luxury involved in any part of this trip. This is a backpacking trip with basic facilities.

Seasonal Variations:

  • Mid Mar to June: Summers are pleasant in Sikkim which pull tourists in good numbers.
  • Jul to mid Sept (monsoons): The rains hit the eastern Himalayas starting from mid June. Journey would be tough during this time. We usually avoid traveling to Sikkim in rains.
  • Mid Sept to Nov (Post monsoon): Another good season to travel before extreme winter sets in. One can expect high tourist footfall in these months.
  • Dec to mid Mar: Temperatures will drop below 0 degrees towards the end of the year with the onset of snow fall covering the entire valley. It will be very difficult to travel and important roads will be closed by Indian Army.

Things to Carry

Things to pack for Sikkim Trip:

  1. Toiletries, moisturizer, light towel, lip balm, wet wipes, toothbrush, toothpaste etc.
  2. A lightweight large Backpack for the entire trip (50-60 liters). Strictly no trolleys. Remember this is a Backpacking trip.
  3. A small backpack for basic items (to carry valuables, water bottle, snacks, etc. for outdoor activities).
  4. Photo identity proof with address (Aadhar/Passport/Voter ID).
  5. 2 Passport size color photographs (important for permit).
  6. Thermal inners and warm clothes (cold climate).
  7. A rainproof jacket with a hood (to protect from cold winds, sudden rain).
  8. Thick socks, track pants, full sleeve t-shirts (to keep your body warm).
  9. Cap/Hat/Sunglasses (to protect from harmful sun rays).
  10. Sunscreen (SPF 50 or more).
  11. Power bank, charger, camera, binoculars (if you wish to).
  12. Hand sanitizer and liquid hand wash for outdoors.
  13. Proper water bottle for your trip. You may fill at our stays.
  14. Disposable garbage covers (to separate used/unused clothes).
  15. Water-resistant good grip shoes for travel, extra slippers to use at stays.
  16. Personal medications, any drugs that you may feel necessary (remember ghat roads, cold climate), basic first aid kit.
  17. No need to carry snacks/chocolates. You may buy at local shops to support local people in Sikkim.

Partial payment is an advance paid to block your slot for a particular event. Remaining amount of the event to be paid online/cash on the day of the trip.

Monks on Wheels will be arranging an Non – AC tempo traveller or a mini bus depending on the group size.

The transport will be arranged from Bengaluru.

Our trips would get confirmed 2-3 days before the event date and you’ll be added to the trip’s WhatsApp group where you’ll receive further necessary information.

Once your registration is confirmed, Monks on Wheels shall provide the exact location of our venue 2-3 days before the event.

Monks on Wheels do not restrict on the age as each individual has their own capabilities. But we would strongly recommend you to contact us so that our travel expert can give you a better idea of the trip.

Refund & Cancellation Policy

For cancellation done by the customer: 1. 80% refund if a cancellation request is sent 30 days before the trip start date. 2. 50% refund if a cancellation request is sent between 30 to 15 days before the trip start date. 3. An email has to be sent to [email protected] to raise a cancellation request. 4. No refund within 15 days of the event start time whatever is the reason (Health, COVID, Accident, Family crisis, Office issue, or anything else). 5. No refund during/after the event. 6. No refund on the partial payment (advance) done to block your seat for the trip. For cancellation due external forces: Monks on Wheels may have to cancel the event in case of external factors that are beyond our control like Natural Disasters, Extreme Weather Conditions, Red Alerts, Political Disturbances, Bandh/Curfews, Local Issues, Road Blocks, Train cancellations, Covid-19 or any other disease outbreaks etc. In these scenarios: 1. No Refund is allowed. 2. 100% trip amount can be used for any other new trip of the same weekend or future weekends. Refund & Cancellation Policy

For cancellation done by the customer: 1. 80% refund if a cancellation request is sent 30 days before the trip start date. 2. 50% refund if a cancellation request is sent between 30 to 15 days before the trip start date. 3. An email has to be sent to [email protected] to raise a cancellation request. 4. No refund within 15 days of the event start time whatever is the reason (Health, COVID, Accident, Family crisis, Office issue, or anything else). 5. No refund during/after the event. 6. No refund on the partial payment (advance) done to block your seat for the trip. For cancellation due external forces: Monks on Wheels may have to cancel the event in case of external factors that are beyond our control like Natural Disasters, Extreme Weather Conditions, Red Alerts, Political Disturbances, Bandh/Curfews, Local Issues, Road Blocks, Train cancellations, Covid-19 or any other disease outbreaks etc. In these scenarios: 1. No Refund is allowed. 2. 100% trip amount can be used for any other new trip of the same weekend or future weekends. The difference amount will be collected from you or paid back according to the new trip cost. 3. Once you confirm your participation on the new trip, all the above Cancellation policies will apply for the same.

Sikkim Tour Package Overview

Sikkim will take you to all the natural wonders as the high mountain passes, pristine glaciers, ice-cold rivers, hot springs in contrast to that, alpine lakes, and a lot more.

Monks on Wheels in association with Muddie Trails takes you to the stunningly beautiful state of Sikkim nestled in the Himalayas known for its eco-friendly and sustainable tourism policies, making it an ideal destination for nature lovers and adventurers seeking an authentic Himalayan experience.

In this backpacking trip, we will cover all the attractions in Sikkim, both East and North, and will also be visiting the capital city of Sikkim, Gangtok.

Our journey will start in the East, with a visit to the top attraction there, like the Tsomgo Lake, which is a natural wonder that changes its color with the seasons, the Baba Mandir and the ghost story associated with it, and the Indo- China border post, the NathuLa Pass.

When we move to the north, we will be visiting the dreamy Gurudongmar Lake, which in winter remains frozen and in summers enchants us with its amazing beauty. This lake is one of the lakes that is situated at such a high altitude that is open to visitors.

The Lachung village, where we will be staying is a picturesque village by the mountains, blessed with mighty waterfalls, orchards of apricot and apple, and many handicraft centers.

We will also be visiting the “valley of flowers” in Yumthang, which is a part of the Lachung valley. Located by the banks of the Lachung river, a tributary of the main river that originates from Sikkim, Teesta, the valley is also abundant with many species of Rhododendron flowers. Hot springs that are said to have medicinal properties are also among the main attractions of Sikkim.

Sikkim is the perfect blend of nature and beauty, and the intervention of humans has only made it more beautiful. The scenic bridges adorned with colorful prayer flags, monasteries, and temples, everything is balanced and closely knit with nature, which will bring peace to our minds.

Short Itinerary

Day 1:

  1. Travelers coming by Flight will get picked at Bagdogra Airport at around 1 PM in the afternoon followed by New Jalpaiguri (NJP) railway station around 01:15 PM.
  2. We will start our journey towards the capital city of Sikkim – Gangtok along the curvy road that runs parallel to the free flowing Teesta river originating from the glaciers of Sikkim.
  3. It’s a drive of 200 Km that usually takes 5 hours along with a Lunch stop.
  4. Check into the guest house by late evening and take a walk on the famous MG marg – the mall road of Gangtok. You can try tasty momos or chow for Dinner and shop for items needed for the trip.
  5. We will rest for a good day tomorrow.

 

Day 2:

  1. Start the day early with Breakfast
  2. Go on a day trip towards picturesque oval-shaped Tsomgo Lake (also called Changu Lake) which is famous for sturdy Yaks, Red Panda and various migratory Birds.
  3. Continue journey to Baba Mandir at an elevation of 13,000 feet. There is an interesting “Ghost” story of Baba Harbhajan Singh who served Indian Army during the 1960s.
  4. We will then head to Nathula Pass on the Indo-China border at an elevation of 14,100 feet, which needs a special permit (we would have pre-applied beforehand).
  5. Nathu La is strategically important for the Indian Army, and is one of the very few Himalayan border posts open for visitors like us.
  6. Head back to the guest house by late evening.
  7. Dinner with social gathering and take good rest for the night.

 

Day 3:

  1. Today we will start our journey towards high altitude North Sikkim famous for snow capped mountains, pristine lakes, gushing water falls and natural hot springs.
  2. Take a pit stop at Butterfly waterfalls and Bhim Nala falls, click lots of selfies.
  3. Stop for Lunch at beautiful Chungthang village at the confluence of Lachen and Lachung rivers.
  4. We will continue our journey to the next destination Lachung Valley.
  5. Rest for the night at Lachung guest house.

 

Day 4:

  1. Start the day very early around 4 AM.
  2. We will head towards Yumthang valley, situated at an elevation of 11800 feet, a 1.5 hour drive from Lachung.
  3. Yumthang which is known as ‘Valley of Flowers” is located in the valley by the Lachung river. It is a picture perfect setting surrounded by snow-clad mountains on all sides.
  4. Give a visit to natural Yumthang hot springs which are known for their medicinal properties because of rich Sulphur and other mineral content. There is a beautiful walking bridge filled with colorful prayer flags across the river Lachung. Hot springs are located at the other side of the bridge. The temperature of hot water springs varies between 50 to 60 degrees celsius even in freezing winter times. Truly a little wonder of mother nature.
  5. We will try local food for Lunch.
  6. Start return journey towards Gangtok by late afternoon.
  7. Check into Gangtok guest house, Dinner and rest.

 

Day 5:

  1. Check out of the Gangtok stay after a heavy Breakfast.
  2. Start journey towards a peaceful village named Ravangla that has a Buddha Park where a giant statue of Buddha sits amidst the backdrop of Himalayas.
  3. Take a stroll in the park, visit Museum, temple & spend some quality time meditating at this serene setting.
  4. After Lunch, continue our journey to one of the most picturesque towns of Sikkim, Pelling that is located at the foothills of World’s 3rd highest peak – the mighty Kanchenjunga!
  5. We will visit interesting places in Pelling like ancient Pemayangtse Monastery, Rabdentse Ruins and local flea market where one can buy traditional handicrafts and souvenirs.
  6. Dinner and rest at Pelling guest house.

 

Day 6:

  1. Early morning we will visit the stunning Sky walk of Pelling that is also called a Glass Bridge. Sky walk is a well-maintained & famous place in Pelling with all safety measures. On a clear day, one can get to view magnificence of mighty Kanchenjunga.
  2. Note: Sometimes we will visit Sky Walk a day before itself, especially where there are afternoon flights to catch from Bagdogra Airport.
  3. Check out of Pelling stay after Breakfast.
  4. We will then bid adieu to the Himalayas of Sikkim and head back towards planes of West Bengal where we started our journey 6 days back.
  5. It’s a 5 hour journey including a Lunch stop, so it’s safe to book flight after 6:00 PM.

Special Notes:

  • Expect seasonal variations in Sikkim depending on the month we are travelling
  • Travelers are expected to come with open heart by appreciating complexities of mother nature based on seasonal variations, monthly or even daily weather conditions.
  • There is no luxury involved in any part of this trip. This is a backpacking trip with basic facilities.

Seasonal Variations:

  • Mid Mar to June: Summers are pleasant in Sikkim which pull tourists in good numbers.
  • Jul to mid Sept (monsoons): The rains hit the eastern Himalayas starting from mid June. Journey would be tough during this time. We usually avoid traveling to Sikkim in rains.
  • Mid Sept to Nov (Post monsoon): Another good season to travel before extreme winter sets in. One can expect high tourist footfall in these months.
  • Dec to mid Mar: Temperatures will drop below 0 degrees towards the end of the year with the onset of snow fall covering the entire valley. It will be very difficult to travel and important roads will be closed by Indian Army.

Double dose vaccination of COVID-19 or RTPCR Test report of COVID-19 less than 72 hours is mandatory for all participants.

Partial payment is an advance paid to block your slot for a particular event. Remaining amount of the event to be paid online/cash on the day of the trip.

Monks on Wheels will be arranging an Non – AC tempo traveller or a mini bus depending on the group size.

The transport will be arranged from Bengaluru.

Our trips would get confirmed 2-3 days before the event date and you’ll be added to the trip’s WhatsApp group where you’ll receive further necessary information.

Once your registration is confirmed, Monks on Wheels shall provide the exact location of our venue 2-3 days before the event.
